I pick up a card to read the question. “Close your eyes.”

Looking up, I see his eyes are still open.

“I said close your eyes.” He finally does. “What color are my eyes?”

He keeps his eyes shut as he replies, “They’re hazel, but not just a regular hazel. The brown near your iris is the color of my favorite whiskey, and the green reminds me of jadeite.”

My heart pounds in my chest listening to his response. I’ve never heard anyone describe my eyes like that. Normally people say they are brown or green. Never hazel, which is their actual color. Why would he say that? Why would he give such a descriptive answer if he doesn’t like me?
